ITINERARY:
DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN TBILISI ➙ STEPANTSMINDA – 495 M ↗ 1750 M – HELLO KAZBEK!
- Arrival at Tbilisi International Airport
- Optional transfer from Tbilisi to Stepantsminda (approx. 3.5 hrs, 150 km) – independent travel also possible; transfer can be arranged on request
- Check-in at guesthouse / hotel in Stepantsminda
- Welcome meeting with your mountain guide – programme briefing
- Equipment check; top up any missing items on-site (gas canisters, gear rental available locally)
- Welcome dinner, overnight in Stepantsminda Stepantsminda
DAY 2: GERGETI ➙ BASE CAMP (METEO / BETLEMI HUT) – 2150 M ↗ 3650 M – 14 KM – HIKING DAY!
- Early breakfast
- 4×4 transfer to Tsminda Sameba Church (Gergeti, 2170 m) at the foot of Kazbek Gergeti Trinity Church
- Loading food and group equipment onto horses
- Trek through Kazbegi Glacier to base camp – Betlemi meteorological station (3650 m), approx. 14 km Kazbegi Glacier
- Set up camp, dinner, overnight in tents
DAY 3: METEO – 3650MNPM ↗ ~4000MNPM ↘ 3650MNPM – 3KM – ACCLIMATIZATION DAY!
- Breakfast
- Acclimatisation hike to approx. 4000 m
- Technical training: ice axe use, crampons, rope belay techniques
- Return to base camp, dinner, overnight Bethlemi Hut
DAY 4: METEO ➙ KAZBEK SUMMIT ➙ METEO – 3650MNPM ↗ 5054MNPM ↘ 3650MNPM – 15KM – SUMMIT ATTACK DAY!
- Wake-up call approx. 2:00 AM, light breakfast
- Departure for summit push approx. 3:00–4:00 AM
- Summit of Kazbek (5054 m) – in good conditions approx. 10:00 AM Mt Kazbek
- Descent to base camp, dinner, overnight
DAY 5: RESERVE DAY (BAD WEATHER ONLY)
- Held in reserve for waiting out poor weather conditions or additional acclimatisation
- If weather allows – summit push as per Day 4 programme
DAY 6: METEO ➙ GERGETI – STEPANTSMINDA 3650MNPM ↘ 2150MNPM – 14KM – FAREWELL DAY!
- Breakfast, strike camp Gergeti Glacier
- Trek down to Tsminda Sameba Church (Gergeti) Observation deck top
- 4×4 transfer back to Stepantsminda
- Expedition ends in Stepantsminda

WHAT MAKES OUR EXPEDITION DIFFERENT:
This expedition is led by experienced mountain guides with a proven track record on 8000-metre peaks in the Himalayas. Throughout the expedition, we provide meals three times a day, based on light, energy-dense food suited to high-altitude mountaineering – ensuring participants receive an optimal calorie intake and proper nutrition. This also supports faster recovery and helps the body adapt to high-altitude conditions during acclimatisation.
Heavy equipment is transported by horses, allowing participants to trek to base camp carrying only a small daypack. This significantly eases the approach to base camp (Meteo), reduces fatigue, overheating, and dehydration, and supports easier acclimatisation once on site. The programme also includes a dedicated acclimatisation day at 4000 m, along with basic training in high-altitude mountaineering techniques.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Due to the possibility of adverse weather conditions in the mountains, the expedition programme may be subject to change. Our experienced guides, each with dozens of summits under their belt, will ensure the safety of the group and make the final call on whether to turn back if conditions deteriorate. We do not guarantee reaching the summit, but we guarantee that we will do everything possible to keep all participants safe.
All participants are required to hold individual travel insurance covering extreme sports and high-altitude mountaineering. We can recommend a specialist insurance provider.
All participants must bring or rent appropriate mountaineering boots for the summit push. Participants without suitable footwear may be excluded from the expedition.
Mountaineering equipment (ice axes, crampons, helmets, tents, gas canisters and stoves) is available for rent locally in Stepantsminda. Excess luggage or unnecessary equipment can be left in storage with us in Stepantsminda.

- Mount Kazbek (5054 m) – one of the highest peaks in the Caucasus and a legendary destination for mountaineers from around the world. A dormant stratovolcano of striking beauty, Kazbek has been woven into Georgian mythology for centuries – it is here, according to legend, that Prometheus was chained to the rock as punishment for bringing fire to humanity. The standard route via the Gergeti Glacier is technically accessible to fit and determined participants with no prior high-altitude experience, making Kazbek one of the most rewarding introductory expeditions in the world.
- Tbilisi – the capital of Georgia and one of its most beautiful cities, nestled in the valley of the Mtkvari (Kura) river and surrounded by hills. Explore the Old Town, the Narikala Fortress dating back to the 4th century, and the famous district of sulphuric bathhouses.
- Georgian Military Highway – one of the most spectacular mountain routes in the Caucasus, crossing the Jvari Pass (2395 m) and passing the medieval Ananuri Fortress perched above the Zhinvali Reservoir.
- Stepantsminda – a mountain town in the Greater Caucasus, home to the iconic Tsminda Sameba Church set against the majestic Kazbek (Mkinvartsveri, 5054 m)
- Trekking via Gergeti Glacier to the Betlemi meteorological station / base camp at 3650 m
- Acclimatisation day and technical training on the glacier
- Summit push on Mount Kazbek (5054 m)
